SingCon 2025 Gathers in Perth Amboy

Over 100 participants assembled to pray and learn more about their faith, their liturgical worship, and their church singing traditions at the intercontinental fifth annual Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church Singing Conference, better known as SingCon, held in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, from 23 to 26 October 2025. The gathering was hosted by the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Assumption Catholic School, thanks to the efforts of pastor Father Ivan Turyk, school principal Lisette Shumny, the Sisters Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, and the gracious parishioners, students, and faculty. Participants came from Philadelphia Archeparchy (39%), Toronto Eparchy (19%), Edmonton Eparchy (18%), Chicago Eparchy (8%), Parma Eparchy (5%), Stamford Eparchy (5%), several Eparchies in Europe, as well as other Eastern Catholic Eparchies and Roman Catholic Dioceses in the USA and Canada.

The daily schedule for SingCon 2025 included a selection of liturgical worship services, such as Vespers, the Hours, Divine Liturgy, and Parastas, as well as rehearsals and workshops. On the second evening, Hieromonk Herman (Majkrzak) presented the Keynote Lecture, entitled “The Cross of Artistic Excellence: Church Musicianship as an Ascetic Path of Salvation,” where he discussed ways to improve church singing in the UGCC, based on a proposed double-model for participation  in the worship of the Church, following the examples of Martha and Mary.

Four workshops were offered this year: A) the services of Baptism, Crowning, and Funerals for parish cantors and clergy, led by Reader Ilya Galadza; B) the biblical foundation, theology, and hymnody of the services of Holy Week, led by Deacon Daniel Galadza; C) church musicianship, designed to help participants become technically more proficient cantors and group leaders, led by Dobrodijka Melita Mudri-Zubacz and Namisha Greening; and D) the complex melodies of the Oktoechos used during Vespers and Matins, led by Deacon Cyril Kennedy and Damein Zakordonski.

After five SingCon gatherings since 2018 aimed at preserving, promoting, and praying the church singing tradition, the work of SingCon has come to be appreciated far beyond those who attended the annual gatherings. During the Town Hall, moderated by Larisa Galadza, SingCon was referred to as a “movement” by Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, who pointed to the need to preserve and foster our church singing traditions, striving for excellence in a spirit of love and Christian fellowship. With this goal in mind, Melita Mudri-Zubacz presented the preliminary work of the SingCon organizing committee, begun earlier this year, to develop a curriculum to teach church singing in the UGCC, which is anticipated to be launched in the near future.

On Saturday evening, Bishop Bohdan of Parma Eparchy presided at the Hierarchal Vigil, which included Litia for the feast of the holy Great-martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer of Thessalonica, as it fell on Sunday. The culmination of the conference was the celebration of the Sunday Hierarchal Divine Liturgy, presided at by Metropolitan Borys of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, who preached on the Gospel of the raising of the widow’s son at Nain (Luke 7:11–17) and spoke to the gathered parishioners about how Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church traditions have been preserved for the church in parishes that worship predominantly in English. 

Thanks to the sponsorship of various benefactors and generous donations from the Philadelphia Archeparchy, the Parma Eparchy, the Edmonton Eparchy, the Archpriest Roman Galadza Legacy Fund, Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church, and Assumption Catholic School, conference costs could be subsidized and reduced for participants. In particular, fifteen scholarships were offered to students and young adults attending the gathering.

The sixth annual SingCon is being planned for September 10–14, 2026, and will take place at Saint Elias Church in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The Keynote Speaker will be Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim, Norway. Further information will be provided in the coming months.

Понад 100 учасників зібралися, щоб разом помолитися та дізнатися більше про свою віру, богослужіння, літургійне благочестя та традиції церковного співу на міжконтинентальний п'ятій щорічній Конференції українського греко-католицького церковного співу, більш відомий як SingCon, яка проходила в Перт-Амбой, штат Нью-Джерсі, США, з 23 по 26 жовтня 2025 року Божого. Зустріч була організована Українською католицькою церквою Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці та Католицькою школою Успіння, завдяки зусиллям пароха отця Івана Турика, директора школи пані Лізетт Шумні, Сестер Згромадження Воплоченого Слова, а також люб'язних парафіян, студентів та викладачів. Учасники були з Філадельфійської архиєпархії (39%), Торонтонської єпархії (19%), Едмонтонської єпархії (18%), Чикаґської єпархії (8%), Пармської єпархії (5%), Стемфордської єпархії (5%), кількох єпархій Європи, а також інших східно-католицьких єпархій та римо-католицьких дієцезій у США та Канаді.

Щоденні заняття SingCon 2025 включали літургійних богослужінь, на приклад Вечірня, Часи, Божественна Літургія та Парастас, а також репетиції та семінари. Другого вечора ієромонах Герман (Майкжа) виступив з основною лекцією під назвою «Хрест мистецької досконалості: церковне музикантство як аскетичний шлях спасіння», де він обговорив шляхи покращення церковного співу в УГКЦ, спираючись на запропоновану подвійну модель участі в богослужінні Церкви, наслідуючи приклад Марфи та Марії.

Цього року було запропоновано чотири семінари: A) служби Хрещення, Вінчання та Похорону для парафіяльних дяків та духовенства, під керівництвом читця Ілії Ґаладзи; B) біблійні основи, богослов'я та піснеспіви служб Страсного тижня, під керівництвом диякона Даниїла Ґаладзи; C) церковне музикантство, як покликання допомогти учасникам стати технічно більш досвідченими дяками та керівниками клиросів, під керівництвом добродійки Меліти Мудрої-Зубач та Наміші Ґрінинг; та D) складні мелодії Октоїху, що використовуються під час Вечірні та Утрені, під керівництвом диякона Кирила Кеннеді та Даміана Закордонського.

Після п'яти зібрань SingCon з 2018 року, спрямованих на збереження, просування та молитву церковної співучої традиції, робота SingCon була оцінена далеко за межами тих, хто відвідував щорічні зібрання. Під час проведення спільного форуму (Town Hall Meeting), яке модерувала Лариса Ґаладза, митрополит Борис Ґудзяк назвав SingCon «рухом», вказавши на необхідність збереження та розвитку наших церковних співочих традицій, прагнучи досконалості в дусі любові та християнського сопричастя та спілкування. Маючи на увазі цю мету, Меліта Мудра-Зубач представила попередню роботу оргкомітету SingCon, розпочату раніше цього року, з розробки навчальної програми для викладання церковного співу в УГКЦ, яка, як очікується, буде запущена найближчим часом.

У суботу ввечері владика Богдан Пармської єпархії очолив Архиєрейське всенічне, яке включало литію на свято святого великомученика Димитрія Мироточивого Солунського, оскільки його поминання випало в неділю. Кульмінацією конференції стало служіння недільної Архиєрейської Божественної Літургії, яку очолив митрополит Борис Філадельфійської архієпархії, який проповідував на тему Євангелія про воскресіння сина вдови в Наїні (Лк. 7:11–17) та розповів зібраним парафіянам про те, як традиції Української греко-католицької церкви були збережені для церкви в парафіях, які богослужіння здійснюють переважно англійською мовою.

Завдяки спонсорській підтримці різних благодійників та щедрим пожертвам від Філадельфійської архиєпархії, Пармської єпархії, Едмонтонської єпархії, Фонду спадщини протоієрея Романа Ґаладзи, Української католицької церкви Успіння та Католицької школи Успіння, витрати на конференцію могли бути субсидовані та зменшені для учасників. Зокрема було запропоновано п'ятнадцять стипендій студентам та молодим людям, які взяли участь у зборах.

Шостий щорічний SingCon заплановано на 10–14 вересня 2026 року Божого і відбудеться в церкві Святого пророка Ілії в Брамптоні, Онтаріо, Канада. Основним доповідачем буде владика Ерік Варден, єпископ Тронгейма, Норвегія. Додаткова інформація буде надана найближчими місяцями.

Workshop 1

Title: “Hatch, Match, and Dispatch”

Description: This workshop presents the services of Baptism, Crowing (Marriage), and Funerals from the Trebnyk, or Book of Needs, lovingly referred to as “Hatch, Match, and Dispatch.” While these liturgical services are presided over by the priest in the Sacramental Mysteries of the faithful, these are not private affairs because the whole Church participates in their sung celebration. In this seminar you will learn all that is necessary to lead the singing of these services in a reverent and beautiful manner, according to the traditions and liturgical books of the UGCC.

Workshop 2

Title: Holy Week

Description: Holy Week is the culmination of the liturgical year and transmits the most important Gospel readings and hymns that explain, in the context of the worship of the Church, who is Jesus Christ. This workshop will cover the services of Holy Friday and Holy Saturday, focusing on the Service of the 12 Gospels, Royal Hours, Entombment Vespers, Jerusalem Matins, and the Holy Saturday Vesperal Liturgy, as they should be celebrated in our churches, according to the liturgical books of the UGCC. Workshop 3

Title: Church Musicianship

Description: This workshop series builds practical confidence in church singing, using the Divine Liturgy: Anthology for Worship as a point of departure. Session 1 (Cantoring Basics) provides the fundamentals of cantoring including music reading and healthy singing, such as good posture, breath support, sound quality, clear diction, matching pitch, keeping rhythm, and reading simple music notation. Session 2 expands on these with identifying musical intervals and triads, simple conducting, blending sounds, and simple harmony, which aids group-singing. Session 3 expands on sight-singing, communicating music effectively, refining conducting skills, leading parts, and planning rehearsals. Together, these sessions equip participants to become technically more proficient cantors and group leaders.

Workshop 4

Title: Vespers: Advanced Oktoechos

Description: Vespers is an essential service of the Church as the beginning of the liturgical day and preparation for the Divine Liturgy. This workshop succinctly explains the basic elements and chants of this service before moving on to the more complex hymns from the Oktoechos used during these services, namely the Samohlasen Tones, the Bulgarian Tones, the Stichera Dogmatika, Doxastika Stichera, and Podoen melodies.
